Dan Schulz, co-host |
Dan Schulz was a lonely man, so he talked to himself. When the
voices in his head got boring, he went on radio. How desperate was
Danny to talk to other people? He started radio at a 3,000 watt
polka station in Wisconsin. Ever see a polka queen? Danny'll tell ya
-- they ain't like the St. Pauli Girl ads. After about a year
combining accordion music with the voices in his head, Danny went to
a Top 40 station Power 104 in the Green Bay area, and helped propel
the morning show he co-hosted to number one in the market.
But the voices in his head grew louder. His morning partner Kevin
Lyons-Tarr told him he just needed a woman. But inside his gut, the
voices writhed and snarled and told him what he needed. A bigger
audience.
So he began getting testimonials from industry players -- people who
could help him get into a bigger market, like maybe Oconto.
"Dan has an incredible knack at relating to the audience,"
said Jim Callow, owner of CJL Broadcasting, "He didn't seem
like a DJ, he just seemed like a regular guy - and that really came
across on the air. They had built up an extremely large and loyal
audience."
Power 104 never experienced the same ratings success after Schulz
and Lyons-Tarr left, leaving a trail of bloodied carcasses in their
wake. The station later closed. Wack-ass bastards had it coming, we
figure.
In 1993, Danny conned the University of Wisconsin into giving him a
bachelor's degree in Communications Processes with an emphasis in
the electronic media (this part, we're not making up. This is an
honest-to-shit degree, even though it sounds completely way to
liberal artsy to have any basis in reality). Still, those negatives
of the university chancellor are at the ready in the safe deposit
box, just in case that one mouthy professor recants.
While in college, Schulz met Scott Wirkus, and was taken with the
young man's musical talent, ability to think quickly on his feet and
the way Scott never seemed to mind paying for the pizza all the
time. So, they developed The Dan & Scott Show. After a few
years, they quit their day-jobs and set out on their own to do the
Dan & Scott Show as their living.
For the next two years, they pretty much starved. Mac-n-Cheese (the
generic shit, not the Kraft creamy stuff), Spam and Jolly Good Cola.
They were ready for the web with chat rooms, interactivity and the
funniest goddamn show on any medium.
Dan lives in Brooklyn (New York) with Amy
and their dog Jack and his dog Libby.
